| This
first of its kind machine was challenged to remove a nation deep in depression
from a century of steam, soot and cinders and introduce it to what would
be the future of modern railroad engineering and travel. So revolutionary
was the design and engineering of this unique train set that it established
many of the standards for locomotive and railcar design, engineering and
manufacturing that we employ today. Nearly three million miles of travel and half of a century have passed since she was idled and placed in retirement. Almost forgotten, ravaged by time and the elements she faced an uncertain future. But this grand old gal still had a sparkle in her sides and had captured the hearts of many who had vision, wisdom and appreciation for her accomplishments. We are determined not only to restore her to full operating condition but to go several giant steps further and insure she will comply, wherever possible, with the same standards required of today’s equipment, standards she had helped to establish! Now, after nearly five years of difficult, frame up restoration at the Claremont Concord Railroad she is ever nearer to completion and we believe better than she ever was. Once again she is making hearts race and exciting the imagination of those who see her. With every screw we turn, weld we make and knuckle we scratch we are honored and proud to be part of this historically significant project and the return of this true “Icon of American Engineering” to her rightful place as one of our nations greatest technological achievements of the last century. |
